The revision of European air quality standards

As part of the European green deal, the European Commission is committed to aligning the air quality standards of the European Union with the WHO recommendations. These were revised in September 2021 by dividing by two the annual guide values for fine particles (5µg/m3) and by four that for nitrogen dioxide (NO2).

The proposal made by the European Commission lowers the pollutant thresholds while determining values higher than those of the WHO.

The annual limits should be reduced:

  • from 25 µg/mto 10 µg/m3 for PM2.5
  • from 40 µg/mto 20 µg/mfor PM10 and NO2

The adoption of this text is scheduled for the end of 2023. In parallel, the Commission is leading action plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.
