Measuring and analyzing air pollutant concentrations is the first essential step in developing public health strategies.
Among the global players in this sector is a French company: ECOMESURE. Based in Saclay, ECOMESURE develops and produces air quality monitoring sensors and data-analytics services. A cutting-edge technology that is rapidly expanding across the globe. Interview with our CEO, Damien Pelletier.

Air quality, a public health priority?

Awareness on the cause/effect relationship between air quality and people's healthcare is not new. However, the health crisis has placed it at the core of concerns. Air quality is measured by analyzing gases and particles within the air. This is a field regulated by strict European standards which define limit thresholds for pollutants concentrations and WHO advice. Ecomesure relies on these regulations and recommendations to develop highly technological sensors whose reliable and precise measurements provide the best indications needed for decision making.

ECOMESURE sensors are distributed all over the world: what are their technological characteristics?

ECOMESURE devotes a large part, more than 15%, of its turnover to research and development. Each sensor measures and analyzes up to 6 pollutants such as CO, CO2, particulate matter up to 1 micron in diameter, VOCs and ozone. They are mainly used in public spaces and in professional buildings. Many local authorities in France have adopted this technology. The cities of Geneva, Dubai, Singapore and many others have chosen ECOMESURE, as have the Boston Public Schools in the United States. Our systems integrate the latest technological developments and undergo a controlled calibration process to provide our customers with quality measurements over the long term. The performance of our sensors is also enhanced by the ease of installation, maintenance, and access to real-time data on a web platform or mobile app.

How is the data analyzed?

ECOMESURE manufactures connected sensors that transmit the measurements made with the highest degree of security, regardless of the means of connectivity: Wi-Fi, LoRa, Bluetooth Low Emission, 3G, 4G or 5G. Our sensors can also be integrated into existing systems. They automatically upload this data to the platforms already in place. This makes it possible to complete and modernize existing systems without changing the entire installation.
In addition to this technology, an analysis software is available on subscription that clearly and visually transcribes the measured thresholds and distinguishes the measurements by pollutants. This software can be parameterized according to the requirements expressed while precisely reproducing the official recommendations.

What role do you give to AI in the development of these sensors?

Artificial Intelligence allows us to get augmented measurements. It is a vast field of investigation to improve the measurements and make anticipatory decisions. Each air component has its limits and reacts to its environment such as temperature or humidity. Artificial Intelligence will integrate these data to correct the alterations of the measurements when the conditions of these are no longer optimal in order to provide - whatever the situation - reliable indications. The development of predictive services is also a very promising market.

What are your development prospects?

ECOMESURE has acquired its reputation through the performance of its solutions. Innovation is the core of our development strategy and is key in the measurement, analysis and restitution of data relating to air quality. The coronavirus crisis has boosted our business. Our turnover has doubled between 2020 and 2021 to reach 5.5 million euros in an increasingly competitive market. Our technological lead makes us anticipate strong growth in the coming years.
