EcomCapture detects site and soil contamination

Land pollution, whether natural or human-made, allows gaseous compounds contained in water and soil to be released into the atmosphere. Monitoring air quality at industrial facilities is crucial for complying with legislation and preventing health problems from exposure to contaminated air.

COUPLING CONTINUOUS MONITORING WITH AIR-CANISTER SAMPLING TO DETECT SITE AND SOIL CONTAMINATION

The need for a cost-effective method of analyzing air pollution at industrial facilities spurred Ecomesure to engineer EcomCapture, a connected solution that remotely triggers air-canister sampling whenever air pollution concentrations are exceeded.

Eurofins, a leader in environmental testing for over 15 years, uses Ecomesure's systems, including EcomCapture, to define the types of environmental pollutants present in a residential area located near an industrial facility. Eurofins’ deployment of our EcomSmart solution to continuously measure volatile organic compounds (VOCs) enabled it to set a VOC limit of 20 ppbv for triggering one-hour canister sampling events.

The analysis allowed Eurofins to rule out the presence of one chemical substance and identify the presence of other volatile compounds related to a brief outdoor event near the facility.

The main advantage of coupling a sensor with canisters is that sampling can be performed either continuously or only when peak pollutant concentrations are detected. On top of that, the solutions are easy to carry and deploy. This enabled Eurofins to place them at various locations on the cleanup site in order to assess impacts based on wind speed and direction, and analyze canister samples to determine the exact composition of the compounds present so as to provide clues on the pollution source.

Benefits of the solution:

  • Laboratory analysis only when necessary
  • Remote activation of sampling
  • Adjustable air sampling time
